CMO to showcase new product range at FPD International 2009

World's first multi-touch 3D displays and eco-friendly LED backlight LCD panels capture attention
Product carbon footprint exhibition area shows commitment to low-carbon production

<Tainan, Taiwan, October 23, 2009> On October 28, CMO (Chi Mei Optoelectronics) will showcase a full range of eco-friendly, energy-efficient thin LCD panels featuring edge-lit LED backlighting, as well as launching the world's first 27-inch high definition (Full HD, 1920x1080) 120Hz LCD panel integrating a 3D display with multi-touch functionality. At the exhibition, CMO will host a special area explaining product carbon footprint and how the aggregate carbon produced in a product's life cycle is calculated, completing the world's first product carbon footprint verification for LCD panels and testifying to CMO's commitment to green products and low carbon production. It is also hoped that the exhibition will usher in an era of product carbon footprint disclosure in the flat panel display industry.

“The development of LCD panels is headed toward diverse applications and continued greening. First to launch products integrating 3D displays and multi-touch functionality, CMO fully embraces the advent of smooth, interactive 3D entertainment. The abundant use of edge-lit LED backlighting makes products more energy-efficient, eco-friendly and thin, as well as more in tune with greening trends. The product carbon footprint exhibition area demonstrates CMO's commitment to green production, and is a reminder to flat panel display makers to strive toward low carbon production,” said Chen-Lung Kuo, CMO vice president of global sales.

Main attractions at CMO's exhibition booth include:
World's first 27-inch high definition (Full HD, 1920x1080) 120Hz LCD panel integrating 3D display with multi-touch functionality, bringing a whole new experience to 3D interaction
This product employs a 120Hz panel with a 3D shutter glasses system, combined with multi-touch design complying with Windows 7 multi-touch requirements. 3D display combined with multi-touch functionality enables new experience for multimedia entertainment, games, digital editing, education and public display applications. The integration of touch modules and panel modules is in line with the trend to AIO (all-in-one) PC, further accelerating the revolution in design of next-generation PCs.

Full range of LED backlit LCD TV panels
Expecting exponential growth in LED backlit LCD TV panels and seizing 20% market share in 2010, CMO is showcasing three (42-inch, 47-inch and 55-inch) edge-lit LED backlit and one (55-inch) direct-type LED backlit LCD TV panel, featuring mercury-free and 20-40% energy-saving. Edge-lit LED backlit panels are characterized by their lightness and thinness, measuring only 10.8mm at their thinnest, which is conducive for downstream customers working on thin industrial designs. Direct-type LED backlighting, on the other hand, optimizes the advantage of local dimming, achieving a static contrast ratio of over a million to one.

Full range of high definition 16:9 LED backlit LCD monitor panels
The full range of five (18.5-inch, 20-inch, 21.5-inch, 23.6-inch and 27-inch) 16:9 LED backlit LCD monitor panels showcased at the exhibition are thin, light, energy-efficient and mercury-free. In particular, appearing for the first time, the 27-inch thin white-light LED high-definition LCD monitor panel, measuring only 1.41cm thick, is the first, world-wide to go into mass production.

Full range of 16:9 LED backlit notebook computer panels
A total of four (11.6-inch, 13.3-inch, 14.0-inch and 15.6-inch) thin 16:9 LED backlit notebook computer panels will be showcased at the exhibition. Using a unique control board which has been optimized to reduce panel thickness to approximately 3.6-3.8mm, this panel meets consumer demand for lightweight, thin notebook computers. Furthermore, the Mini Power range consisting of the 13.3-inch and 14.0-inch panels uses CABC (Content Adaptive Backlight Control) to dynamically adjust the backlight brightness according to the displayed image, effectively reducing power consumption by 35% in comparison to normal LED products, allowing batteries to last longer.

World's first high-end monochrome dual backlight medical panel
With the capability of mass production of IPS (In-Plane Switch) wide angle technology, CMO is the only medical panel supplier in the industry possessing both IPS and MVA wide angle technologies. Two of the world's first high-end monochrome dual backlight medical panels, including the 21.3-inch 5.0-megapixel and 20.8-inch 3.0-megapixel panels, will be showcased at the exhibition. These are the industry's only medical LCD panels which allow flexible adjustment of display color, and feature high resolution, high brightness and high contrast. The development of innovative dual backlight sources separates the backlight module into the main light source and a sub light source. The CCFL main light source meets the requirement of medical displays for high brightness (more than 1,500nits) and the LED sub light source adjusts color to facilitate comparison of pre- and post-treatment results, increasing diagnostic precision.

Industrial and vehicle display panels
Showcased at the exhibition are five LED backlight industrial and vehicle display panels, including the 12.1-inch XGA, 12.1-inch SVGA, 10.4-inch XGA, 7-inch WVGA and 8-inch WVGA panels. In particular, the 12.1-inch XGA panel features a high-brightness backlight module and low-reflection polarizer surface treatment to increase readability under strong outdoor lighting. The special structural design of the 10.4-inch XGA panel allows it to be combined with an electromagnetic digitizer tablet, opening up more possibilities for portable devices. The 12.1-inch XGA, 12.1-inch SVGA and 7-inch WVGA panels, on the other hand, use high durability LEDs with high brightness lasting for up to 50,000 hours. The 7-inch WVGA and 8-inch WVGA panels are designed for vehicle use, featuring high color saturation and durability.

Mobile phone panel and personal navigator panel
The 3.5-inch WVGA is an application panel for smart phones. Featuring 269ppi high resolution (480x800), MVA wide angle, narrow bezel (1.8mm) and thin design (1.8mm), meeting the requirements of smart mobile phones for refined picture quality and portability. It is also highly cost competitive due to the use of a-Si high-conformance mass production process rather than the LTPS process.

The 4.3-inch WVGA panel is suitable for use in sophisticated handheld mobile devices, such as personal navigators, multimedia MP4/MP5 players, mobile TVs and  handheld game consoles. It features high transmission, high readability and high brightness, resulting in optimized display quality under sunlight. Pressure Mura Free features enable touch screen functions.

Amongst the large-size products exhibited are the 55-inch high-brightness (1500nits) public information display and 56-inch 10-bit,100%NTSC, QFHD (3840x2160) display panels, which are designed for specialized high-end applications, including digital movies and medical use.

FPD International 2009 will be held at Pacifico Yokohama, Japan. CMO’s exhibition booth number is 2901.
